Ludovico (Vico) Magistretti was born in 1920 in Milan, Italy.

Vico Magistretti attended the Parini Classical High School and then enrolled, in the fall of 1939, in the School of Architecture at the Royal Polytechnic University of Milan. Between 1943 and 1944, he moved to Switzerland, where he took several academic courses at the Champ Universitaire Italien in Lausanne. It was during this period that he became acquainted with Ernesto Nathan Rogers, a key figure in his intellectual development.

In 1945, he returned to Milan, where he earned his degree in architecture from the Polytechnic.
